The project

Research Group on Illustrated Periodicals

The MAGAZINE MATTER research group examines illustrated magazines as complex media environments shaped by technological, material, editorial, and cultural processes. Our research explores how magazines produce meaning through the interaction of images, text, layout, and material form, and how these elements shape practices of production, circulation, and reception.

The research group is coordinated by Carlotta Castellani (Università degli Studi di Urbino), Mary Ikoniadou (Leeds Beckett University), and Vincent Fröhlich (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen–Nürnberg).

Through workshops, seminars, publications, and the Magazine Matter podcast, the initiative builds an international research network dedicated to the study of illustrated periodicals and contributes to the forthcoming Handbook of Illustrated Magazines (Brill).

MAGAZINE MATTER is supported by Brill’s Handbooks in Literature and Cultural Studies series and ESPRit – European Society for Periodical Research.
